History and Mission

Q. There are a number of other women-oriented groups in Philadelphia, including those that focus on women in business. How is PWR different?

A. PWR complements, rather than substitutes for other organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area that focus on women in business. It is expected and likely that PWR participants and members are, and will continue to be, active in other women’s organizations (as are PWR’s founders). PWR is different from other organizations, since it targets women who either are on the edge of or have recently reached a senior (management) level within their organizations. PWR participants and members are still, in many respects, learning the ropes!

Although they may have experienced career success, they are not yet at the level of success for which they strive. PWR also targets women involved in various professions, across many industries, including corporations, professional services firms, government, non-profits, academia and small businesses. Finally, PWR is focused on advancing the goals of the particular, individual professional women it serves.

Q. I know that “PWR” could stand for “power” – is that intended?

A. Although we would like to claim that we were that creative, it was actually a happy coincidence. However, as you will see if you come to one of our events, having recognized what PWR stands for, we do refer to the group as POWER and expect to continue to do so. It reflects our view of the organization as a source of power for women in moving their careers forward!

Events

Q. What kinds of events and activities does PWR host? How often, when and where do you meet?

A. PWR meets monthly, in the evenings between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., although we may vary the meeting times and include breakfast and/or lunch meetings in the future – depending upon the event, the speaker and/or the preferences of the group. The meeting day will vary from month to month, although it will generally be a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

We expect to alternate programs between Leadership events highlighting prominent Philadelphia women leaders, where the speaker will discuss her personal stories and experiences; skill-building events at which a speaker will share insights on particular topics such as networking, finding mentors, developing a successfully public presence and the like; and pure Networking events, where our participants will have the opportunity to exchange business cards and interact with other women professionals in an informal setting.

We meet in facilities donated to us, generally around Center City Philadelphia, and sometimes in other nearby locations.

Q. Is there a fee to join or attend Events?

A. Our yearly membership dues are $100 and our events fees will be $20 for paid members and $30 for non-members and guests. You have the option to prepay your dues and event fees at a discounted rate of $240. This will cover your yearly membership and all regular monthly events. You will save you an additional $100 by prepaying under this option. Our PWR events have been graciously supported by the organizations that have been donating meeting space and refreshments, on occassion. As our organization and our slate of cutting edge speakers grows, we expect to cover the costs of our events from our dues, event fees, and sponsorship contributions.

Please see our “Membership” section for additional details and for a Membership Application.

Membership

Q. I have several friends or colleagues I would like to introduce to PWR. Is it ok to do that?

A. We encourage you to spread the word about PWR and to bring a guest to one of our events. If you have friends or colleagues who fit our member profile, please contact us at Membership@PWRoundtable.com and we will be happy to send information on our membership.

We also recommend that more senior women consider recommending PWR to their junior colleagues and friends.

Q. I am more senior than the group PWR targets, but would like to support PWR and the women it serves. Is there any way that I can get involved?

A. Yes. We have established an Advisory Committee made up of more senior women who provide advice and support in planning events and activities, and through participation in these efforts.

Sponsorship

Q. My organization would be willing to sponsor a future PWR event – is that something that you would be interested in?

A. Absolutely! We would like to keep PWR events at a low cost, for as long as possible, so we welcome sponsorship for our events or our organization. For more information comtact Sponsorship@PWRoundtable.com.

Volunteering

Q. I am interested in speaking at or recommending a speaker or topic for an upcoming PWR event – are such suggestions welcome?

A. Definitely. Please contact the Events committee at Events@PWRoundtable.com with your ideas.

Q. How can I get more involved?

A. PWR is a purely volunteer organization, so we welcome the involvement of our Members. Please see a description of our PWR Committees and responsibilities, or contact Volunteer@PWRoundtable.com
